A lot of people confuse translating and interpreting.
Translating is the converting of a written text into another language.
Interpreting is the converting of speech into another language.
We interpret spoken German into spoken English and spoken English into spoken German. We cover:
normal speech of a general nature, such as an address by a visiting dignitary from Liechtenstein, a guided tour of an historic building to Austrian tourists, a video conference between the Scottish and German members of a town twinning association, or a telephone conversation between an Orcadian property owner and a prospective Swiss purchaser
speech of a specialist nature in the same subject areas as we translate, such as a telephone call from an English salesman hoping to sell components to a German manufacturer, an explanation being given by a Swiss service engineer, or a technical discussion between the representatives of a Californian computer company and a Swabian electronics firm
For all but the most general matters, it is difficult to interpret well without prior preparation. Therefore we request the client to provide us with any background information available, ideally a few days in advance. We then study this material in detail and discuss it between us, maybe coming back to the client for clarification, in order that we are thoroughly prepared on the day.
For example, if a particular machine is going to be discussed, we would expect to be provided with technical literature about it (in either, or both languages). If we are to interpret a speech, it would help to have notes from the person going to give it.
Owing to our remote geographical location, the opportunities
for us to interpret face-to-face are limited. If you require us to come to
you, air travel and overnight accommodation will be necessary.
However, we can do interpreting remotely by telephone. We may also be able
to negotiate access to local video conferencing facilities.
